Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a need-based program funded by the federal government that provides eligible students with the opportunity to earn wages through part-time work, including some community service positions (depending on availability). Here’s how it works:
Award and Earnings
- Maximum Earnings: The amount listed in your FWS award letter is the maximum you can earn through FWS during the academic year. Typically, students can reach this amount by working up to 7 hours per week.
- Payment: Earnings are paid bi-weekly, usually by direct deposit, based on the actual hours worked.
Important Notes on FWS Employment and Funding
- Not Applied to Your Account: FWS earnings are paid directly to you and are not applied to your student billing account or shown as anticipated funds. We recommend not relying on FWS earnings for upfront school expenses at the start of the semester.
- No Job Guarantee: Receiving an FWS award does not guarantee a job. Positions are assigned by the Office of Financial Aid, and placement is based on the best match to your skills and experience. Although we consider preferences, specific job requests are not guaranteed.
Job Assignment and Requirements
- Accepting the Offer: To participate, you must accept your FWS award in SIS and submit a Work-Study application by the specified deadline.
- Job Details: Position details and assignments will be posted to your SIS account under the "Special Messages" tab before the semester begins.
FWS Eligibility and Additional Employment Options
- FAFSA Requirement: All students who complete the FAFSA are considered for FWS. If you qualify, FWS will appear on your award letter and/or in SIS. If you do not qualify, additional campus employment opportunities are available through the Career and Professional Development Center.
