Revision of Aid Policy

The Office of Financial Aid reserves the right to revise your awards according to Federal, State and Institutional policies and regulations. Award revisions may be made when the following conditions occur, including but not limited to:

  • Changes in the information reported on any financial aid applications.
  • Receipt of outside awards (outside scholarships, Veterans’ Education Benefits, tuition remission, etc.)
  • Unexpected business disruptions caused by natural disasters and/or other emergency situations that impact campus operations.

Receipt of Outside Awards

You must notify the Office of Financial Aid of the receipt of any outside awards by completing the Outside Scholarship Report. Outside awards received that do not include information about renewability will be assumed to be renewable until we are notified otherwise.

Outside awards will be treated as follows:

  • First, it will be used toward any unmet need in your award. Unmet need is the difference between your Estimated Family Cost to Attend Rensselaer and your Federal SAI.
  • Next, if the outside award exceeds your unmet need, Federal regulations require us to reduce need-based Federal aid (Work-Study, SEOG and/or Subsidized Direct Loan) by the amount received.
  • Finally, the remaining outside award will replace existing RPI need-based aid rounded up to the nearest $100 increment This adjustment will not impact your RPI merit-based scholarships, unless combined aid sources exceed the estimated cost of attendance.

We will verify the information reported on your initial and subsequent (if applicable) FAFSA and CSS Profile applications to ensure accuracy. Please note that your award eligibility may change based on this review. Should your eligibility change, a revised award notification will be made available to you.
